Scene: Admiral Kirk and crew have beamed down to Genesis planet. Kirk is standing apart from his crew, there's a Klingon on the horizon, and  McCoy is seated,on a rock,  dejected that no one is listening to his  advice, as usual.

(Kirk, looking at flames beginning to break out of ground, sings. )

"I touch the fire and it freezes me.
I look into it and it's black.
Why can't I feel? My skin should crack and peel!
 I want the fire back!

"Now through the smoke Spock calls to me,
to make my way across the flame. To save the day
Or maybe melt away.
I guess it's all the same!
So I will walk through the fire,
Cause where else can I turn?
I will walk through the fire and let it ..."

(McCoy breaks in:)
"The torch I bear it's scorchin' me
Spock is laughing I've no doubt
I hope they fry-I'm free if they both die!"
(Gets up and starts walking toward Kirk, anger gone)
"I'd better help them out!"

(The Klingon, over the hill:)
"Cause he is drawn to the fire
(Both McCoy and Klingon simulaneously sing:)
Klingon: "Some people never learn
McCoy: He will never learn
And he will walk through the fire and let it ..."

Scotty:" Is my Enterprise in danger?
"Will this thing turn out to change her?
" Is the Admiral too far gone to care?"

Sulu: "What if the Admiral can't defeat it?"
Chekov: "Slanted eyes is right, ve're needed!
Or ve could just sit around and glare."

Crew:" We'll see it through, it's what we're always here to do,
So we will walk through the fire."

Kirk: "So one by one they turn from me.
I guess my friends can't face the cold.
But why I froze not one among them knows,"
Uhura: (over Kirk) "What can't we face, "
Kirk          "And never can be told!"
Uhura:      "If we're together?"
McCoy:     "Spock came from the grave much graver"
Klingon (simultaneously)" So one by one they come to me"
McCoy:    " First he'll kill them, then I'll save them! "
Klingon: (simultaneously) "The distant redness as their guide"
Uhura: (simultaneously)" Everything is turning out so dark!'
Kirk (simultaneously)" Going through the motions!"
Klingon:(simultaneously)" Ain't what they had in mind!"
McCoy: (simultaneiously)" No, I'll save them, then I'll kill them!"
Saavik:(plaintively)" I think this line is mostly fill-in!"
Scotty: (simultaneously)" Enterprise's dying strikes the spark!
Kirk: "These endless days are finally ending in a blaze!"
Klingon: (simultaneously) "And he will come to me-ee!"
All: "And we are caught in the fire,
       The point of no return.
So we will walk through the fire,
       And let it bu-rn!
       Let it b-u-r-n!
       Let it burn!"
(They walk together, singing, Kirk checking Spock's prone body for life
as they reach
       the Klingon. )

Klingon, spoken: "SHOWTIME!"
